Workday Weekend Extravaganza Success!

Our Workday Weekend Extravaganza was a huge success this past weekend. We met a whole bunch of new neighbors through both the meeting and volunteering who are excited about the spring season. We will be out working in the lot every Sunday and our next meeting is Saturday, April 27 at 4pm in the lot. Also exciting is that we received a Neighborhood Grant from the Citizens Committee of New York for a plant giveaway in mid-June. More details to follow! If you're interested in helping to plan this event, please contact us at patchensquare@gmail.com
At the meeting on Saturday, we discussed the following:
Garden Beds: Originally, we planned on creating community beds, but there was a strong desire to create individual beds. There will be 8 garden beds created at 8' x 4'. Please come to the next meeting if you're interested in your own plot.
Orchard: The holes have been dug and we are coordinating with TreesNY to receive two cherry trees in the fall. We will be using the time leading up to prepare the holes for the trees by filling them with compost. The other two holes we had planned for trees were found to be unusable as there are pipe lines running through them, so we will be using those as drainage.

Herb Beds: The first herb bed has been created and planted. Andrea will lead this project and will work with the community to teach neighbors about natural herbal medicines. The other beds are still in the works.
Shed: We will be constructing the flooring on Sunday, April 21st. Please come out if you like building!
Leveling/Retaining wall/Chip: We received three loads of wood chip from the Hurricane Sandy cleanup. And will be creating a retaining wall with rubble in the low point of the lot to prevent more sinking and filling with chip. Once this is done, we will add top soil and create a lawn for community activities and playing.
